ST. LOUIS—Ms. Allinger, a make-up artist, and her husband attended the Shen Yun Performing Arts show at the Bezemes Family Theater, Lindenwood’s J. Scheidegger Center for the Arts on Thursday night, Feb. 11, just a few days before Valentine’s Day.

In fact, Mr. Allinger, sales manager for a cosmetic company, had given her tickets as a Valentine Day gift.

“My husband surprised me. This was our Valentine Day gift. So I said you pick out what we could do. Don’t tell me anything, just surprise me,” and he did surprise her with tickets to the Shen Yun show.

She continued, “So I came here with absolutely no expectations, and it made it even more beautiful because it was a total surprise from this beautiful family theater here to the production.”

The surprise delighted her: “It was just amazing, absolutely amazing. I absolutely loved the show. It was very smooth, very, never a dull moment. It just totally kept me entertained from start to finish. I just can’t wait for the next act,” she said during intermission.

Many components of the performance pleased her. She said, “I absolutely enjoyed the artistic skills behind the dance, the background, the photography, the storyline and the dialogue.”

After a moment she said, “I just can go on and on and on, because it is just the most beautiful production I have ever seen in my entire life.

Ms. Allinger had taken a look at the orchestra and observed that the musicians played a variety of Eastern and Western instruments. The pipa, the suona, the oboe, the trumpet, the violin and the cello are part of the ensemble.

She said, “I actually went to the front after the show and looked into the orchestra pit, and I saw the different instruments at that point.”

Overall, she was very surprised at the blend of the instruments, at the dancers, at seeing another culture and at the theme. “I was just totally amazed,” she said.

After going home she planned go into action and promote the show: “I’m going to send out some emails. I have some Vietnamese, Chinese, and Korean and Jewish and Catholic and Christian friends. I definitely feel that this is something everybody, of all cultures, should see.”

Mr. Allinger also wanted to say a few words: “The show exceeded all my expectations. The choreography, the music, the costumes, they were all fabulous. I was very impressed.”

‘It was the grace, the presentation, the beauty of it’

Mr. Wheeler, an independent insurance contractor and his wife Sandy, who teaches art, enjoyed the show. They bought tickets after they saw advertisements.

“It’s beautiful, and I love the costumes,” were Ms. Wheeler’s first words.

What impressed her about the show was “the grace, the presentation, the beauty of it, and especially the female dancers. They were very beautiful. Just thinking of the way they glide across the stage, as if they were floating. It was beautiful.”

She paused and thought a little and then said, “I think it was very spiritual too. There’s a lot of meaning to it.”

Ms. Wheeler said she perceived “a spirit beyond the material things that are sort of matter, good and evil, respecting nature and beauty and the human spirit.”

Agreeing with his wife, Mr. Wheeler said, “Exactly. I couldn’t have put it better.”

“Because we’re all human beings and we are all spiritual. No matter what adversities, your spirit will get you through,” Mrs. Wheeler said in conclusion.

Shen Yun will perform in the Bezemes Family Theater of Lindenwood University’s J. Scheidegger Center for the Arts through Saturday, Feb.13.
