No help when elderly falls down in street of Shanghai, foreign woman curses and cries

    | August 10th, 2012

8:00 am this morning at Huaihai Road, Xinhua Road, an old man fell to the ground and his head was covered in blood. Bystanders called 120 but the answer was: “no more ambulance, wait for it.” A foreign woman cursed, “Fuck you Chinese, you should call ambulance!” The first one to help the elderly up was also this foreigner, looking at the blood on the ground crying… Half an hour later, the ambulance finally came

Liberation Daily reporter @橙邾 posted this incident and photos onto Weibo.

    8/10 10:32

Sometimes  have to say, the ‘Magic City’s (Shanghai)’ 120 system is really fucking messed up.  Today 8 am at Xinhua Road and West Huaihai Road, an elderly was lying on the ground, with blood covering his head.  Bystander called 120, but the answer they got was there was no more ambulance to dispatch.  When pleading urgency of the situation, they only gave one word – “wait”.  The elderly struggled to get up and constantly made painful sound, the woman who called 120 burst into tears.

    20120811-shanghai-elder-01

    8/10 10:51

There are many bystanders, but all of them were just cursing on the phone to 120, nobody dared to help the elderly up.  A foreign woman riding a moped stopped by and cursed with very clear voice “Fuck you Chinese, you should call an ambulance!” I believe many people heard that, but no one talked back.  The first person squat down to help the elderly was this foreigner.  She also took out a white towel from her handbag to put on the elderly’s head.  At this time the ambulance was till no where to be found.

    20120811-shanghai-elder-04

    8/10 10:58

Continue.  At this time the police finally came.  They called 120 with their radio but still no result.  This foreigner looked at the blood on the floor and kept crying.  She also took out money to give to people on the street, saying they must pay his medical expenses with it.  Maybe this is the only benefit of living in a so-called International metropolis.  The crowd of people, including myself, all felt a biting sense of powerlessness.

    20120811-shanghai-elder-02

    8/10 11:05

After waited for half an hour, the fucking ambulance finally came.  Three idiots in the ambulance were smiling and horsing around, did you not know delaying could  possibly cause a life?  Poor elderly, before getting into the ambulance kept saying to take him to a district hospital, do not take him to a major hospital.  In the end, the ambulance took him to the closest 455 hospital.  In the entire incident, the most fucked up is 120, that’s for sure!  And the bystanders including me, in front of this foreigner we should all hit our faces.

    20120811-shanghai-elder-03

    8/10 11:12

The above is the recording of what happened this morning.  Perhaps not enough for hot news, but it is a real tragedy happened around us.  Too many can be discussed here, but the only thing don’t want to see is helping 120 bureaucracy to wash away their responsibly.  Civil society, the only thing we can do is to help each other.

    8/10 15:41

Tell everyone a good news, the 87-year-old Mr. Qian who fell down this morning has now been admitted to 455 hospital on West Huaihai Road.  Doctor diagnosed that minor brain stem caused dizziness which led to the fall and caused minor head injury.  Currently he is conscious and should be fine.  Family members rushed to the scene not knowing what had happened.  I told them people called the police and 120, they were very grateful to the anonymous good Samaritans.  Hot weather, be very careful if you elderlies at home.

    From Tianya:

Hagens Human Cadavers Exhibition: All Bodies Come From Chinese Prisons

Recently, the “Hagens (Gunther von Hagens) ” story has recently been the focus of public interest. There has been much controversy on an exhibited human cadaver of a young pregnant Chinese woman with an 8-month old baby in her womb. The focus of the controversy is on whether or not the body was legally obtained, because according to national laws, no pregnant woman can be executed, and even if one died of natural causes, according to traditional Chinese culture,no families or relatives would ever send the body to the relevant institution and allow it be turned into a human specimen. However, the human cadavers have no identity or any other information regarding where they come from, which attracted public attention on the legality of the origins of the bodies.

A pregnant woman, one of hagens' exhibitions of human cadavers.

A pregnant woman, one of hagens' exhibitions of human cadavers.

Gunther von Hagens is a German anatomist. Hagens, in 1977, invented plastination of the human body, and patented the technique. Von Hagens Plastination (Dalian) Co., Ltd. specializes in biological plastination. The company researches and develops biological plastination technology, and manufactures and sells plasticized cadavers. It has a research and development center based in the Dalian High-tech Park, and six manufacturing workshops who work on fixing, dissecting, sawing and cutting, dehydrating, and hardening of the bodies.

Yu Jintao, journalist of the Oriental Outlook weekly, had thoroughly investigated the company and did two reports in November 2003 and October 2005, titled “Investigation on the Corpse Factory” and “Investigation on the Dalian Corpse Company: Controversy on the Legality of the Mysterious Factory”. Both reports caused public controversy back then, and brought the attention of the State Council, which instructed the National Bureau of Quality Inspection to send an inspection team to check on the company’s investment and import and export status, making specifications on the import and export of human genetic material.

However, Von Hagens Plastination (Dalian) Co., Ltd was honored as a German wholly-owned “high-tech company”, the world’s largest human specimen processing factory. Strangely, the company crowned as a “high-tech” star enterprise by the local government seems very mysterious. The factory site, which has never displayed any signs, is located in a place where even Dalian’s locals are unfamiliar with, and the company rehires their transportation drivers every a few months.

The factory deals with human cadavers from all over the world, and held a world exhibition called “Body Worlds“. All of the items exhibited are made of human bodies, sawed from the middle, or stripped layer by layer, or put into bizarre sporting poses. Throughout its world exhibition tour, every day people are shocked and frightened into fainting. Already, over 20 million people around the world have visited the Hagens human cadavers exhibition, which has made over 1 billion US dollars in profit for Hagens. All items exhibited were made in Dalian, China, the world’s biggest human cadavers factory.

    From Sina:

Suspicions on the Source of the Bodies

Where does “the corpse factory” get all its human bodies? Hagens himself has not given any clear or definite explanations, and various publicized information contradicts each other.

    Hagens' employees making human cadavers.

Hagens said in an interview that the human bodies are mainly donated, and imported from Germany and other countries as well. However, according to a Hong Kong media report, one of his employees claimed that Hagens had frequently smuggled human bodies into the country, and he quit for fear of taking legal responsibility. The employee is Sui Hongjin, who established Dalian Hoffen Bio-Technique Co., Ltd, which also specializes in human body plastination.

Hagens' employee and one of the human cadavers.

The German weekly Der Spiegel once had a report titled “Doctor Death: Von Hagens’ Business Trick”, which revealed the story of Hagens obtaining dead prisoners’ bodies, turning them into exhibition specimens and trading them. According to the Der Spiegel report, an internal document of the company shows that in December 2001, the company had received two bodies, one of a young male and the other of a young female, and that both very likely had been executed because bullet holes were on the deceased bodies. Hagens said during the interview with the Der Spiegel reporter that his employees were in charge of purchasing of the bodies, that he was shocked that such thing happened in his company and that the relevant persons were fired already.

A disclaimer on the website for “Bodies: The Exhibition“, one of the many competing exhibitions similar to Hagen’s “Body Worlds” exhibition:

These specimens are either in sports poses or sex poses. The problem is not in whether or not they are from China, or Southeast Asia, or Africa or any other countries that are willing to sell human bodies. The truly horrifying reality is with that these mummies created under the guise of medical science, are all of the people looking at them looking at the secrets of the Egyptian pharaohs, or are they consuming death?

What do you think of such exhibitions? Do you have concerns about where the bodies come from?

  • Kindergarten Teacher Commands Class to Take Turns Hitting Girl

Kindergarten Teacher Commands Class to Take Turns Hitting Girl

The bruise on Le Le's back.

    From Sina:

Kindergarten Teacher Commands a Class of 29 Children to Take Turns Hitting Little Girl

Reader tip: While Weifang Changle County Chengguan Street 6-year-old Le Le was attending class at a kindergarten there, because she had talked during class, the teacher had the class of 29 children take turns punching Le Le 10 times each, causing a large bruise to appear on Le Le’s back. Up to now, Le Le is afraid to go to school, and the teacher who commanded the students to punch her hasn’t shown up since either.

    [...]

Under her mother and this reporter’s encouragement, Le Le described what happened. That day during music class, Ms. Bi was playing the piano on the platform. A classmate took Le Le’s eraser, Le Le asked him for it, but wouldn’t give it back. Ms. Bi came down off the platform, accused Le Le of talking in class, and ordered the whole class to hit her, 10 punches for each person. There were 32 children in the class and apart from two children who didn’t hit her, the other students all punched her 10 times each.

    [...]

After Le Le left the hospital, Mrs. Hao [Le Le’s mother] has been asking the kindergarten how they’re going to deal with this hitting incident, never imagining that the kindergarten principal would not pay any more visits after the one visit to the hospital. What more, even when Mrs. Hao and her husband went to the kindergarten, the relevant person in charge of the kindergarten would not see them nor would the kindergarten principal be reached by phone. So Mrs. Hao sought the Changle County Education Bureau where one of the bureau’s staff workers said the teacher who had commanded the whole class of children to hit Le Le has already been fired, but she has already gone into hiding and couldn’t be found.

On the morning of August 7, this reporter reached kindergarten principal Yan on the phone. Upon learning this reporter’s identity [as a reporter], the principal immediately hung up. Afterwards, the reporter contacted Changle County Education Bureau and one of the bureau staff workers told this reporter that a the disciplinary decision had already been made regarding the person involved. When this reporter asked what the decision was, this staff member told the reporter to contact the news spokesman of the bureau, Secretary Guo, but this Secretary Guo’s phone could never be reached.

While this reporter was doing this interview, at 19:37 on August 6, the Changle County Police Bureau posted a message through their official weibo: “July 11, we received a report concerning kindergarten student Le Le was hit and injured. The district police station immediately dispatched police officers to investigate. Through investigation, this teacher used disguised corporal punishment on the student causing slight injury, violating the relevant regulations of the Teachers Law of the Peoples Republic of China, and was then handed over to Education Administration Department. July 14, the Education Administration Department dismissed this teacher from work.”

  • Medical emergency in Shanghai and power of Weibo

Medical emergency in Shanghai and power of Weibo

    | August 11th, 2012

Since we are on the topic of China’s medical emergency response system.  A Dutch living in Shanghai has just ran into a medical emergency involving with a British guy.  He tells his experience on his blog, the following is a guest post by Joop Dorresteijn via joop.in.

    20120811-120-01

We found a Brit in a pool of blood this morning, on our way to the bakery. He was looking really ill, surrounded by Chinese people, but he was just lying there. At that point he wasn’t able to speak much or move around, later we discovered that he had cut his wrist by accident inside his apartment, where he lost a considerable amount of blood, made his way downstairs and basically fell on the curb where he was bleeding for 30 minutes more.

Of course the group of bystanders, of which two Chinese/New Zealand students, had called an ambulance 30 minutes earlier but they were told that there were no ambulances available. We decided to call again nevertheless but didn’t get through. Luckily for him, the police drove by and they proposed to drop him off at the hospital. We lifted him in the back of a police car, on our way he told me that he felt he was going to die.

I identified his blood type incase he would pass out and we got him inside the ER and arranged the paperwork. He didn’t carry much on him but had some ID and insurance info in his pocket. I felt helpless trying to explain the English details to the Chinese staff, they couldn’t understand me. A few minutes later, the two New Zealand / Chinese bystanders arrived at the hospital with my wife to help out. The hospital was sure to confirm insurance before treating him after which he was properly taken care off. We stayed for a couple of hours and saw to it that he got the proper care.

I also called the British consulate, who apparently put me though to the emergency call center in London. The operator didn’t speak Chinese so explaining him the Chinese hospital name and Chinese street details lead to a very confusing call. Seemed like a sluggish system, considering the amount of Brits that live in P.R.C.? Anyway, I have to say that the Shanghai police really helped him out, first of all taking him into a car (taxi wouldn’t allow that) and trying to locate his friend. Anyway, In a situation like this, you cannot depend on the ambulance to come and pick you up. I’ve seen pedestrians hit by cars and eventually put inside taxi’s to the hospitals. It’s not rare if bystanders don’t react. If you see an actual ambulance, they are poorly equipped and drive much slower then they could.

My wife has studied Chinese for quite some time now, she mentioned they studied a lot about culture and history, but never did they talk about what to do in a medical emergency, something that would have been useful. All you foreigners abroad, be sure to carry your ID and insurance with you at all times, preferably with a person to call in case of emergency. Better yet, have cash and a mobile phone with you as well.

Part 2: It started with a Weibo repost

About 3 hours after bringing the British patient in we went back to find him still in ER alone. The doctor knew that we were strangers but asked if we could find someone to pick him up eventually. The patient didn’t carry a phone, but we did get the name of his boss.

We left and headed back home, calling the UK consulate again hoping to get a direct number for the doctor in the hospital but they couldn’t disclose information and said that the company is responsible for him, they couldn’t do anything from London until Monday morning.

Back home we went online but found this company had hardly any information online, but found the profile of his boss at linkedin.com however, this business network prohibits contacting strangers directly. Dead end? We decided to put a message on Twitter and Sino Weibo around 6PM. We called out for his boss by name and also mentioned the company.

On Twitter, it got people in HK and UK involved, however, it gained traction on Weibo as some microbloggers started translating and reposting my message to sometimes over 50.000 followers.

At around 10PM, one person on Weibo actually traced a telephone number and called it, but no result. People kept reposting and updating and around 10:30 PM, a customer recognized the company’s name and contacted a sales representative. The sales rep. send me a Weibo message around 11PM, about to contact all the people necessary. In no time, help was under way to the patient in the hospital. We could relax now someone from the company was headed to the hospital, due to weibo. It struck me how Weibo is indeed enabling social participation in this country. For the readers not familiar with the Chinese microblogging service, right now almost everyone online in China is using Weibo:

The Chinese Twitter-like service saw a penetration of more than 88.8% among China’s digital populace aged more than 20 […] almost every Chinese netizen has a weibo account. […] China has more than 538 million Internet users and 388 million mobile Internet users. (Technode, 28 July 2012 )

It reminded me of a BBC radio podcast by Duncan Hewitt I came across recently, regarding a Beijing Weibo user who spotted a truckload of dogs headed for consumption in a morning in April. He took a photo and put on his microblog. Around noon, people starting reposting it, leading to people gathering and blocking the truck. In the evening, the group of Weibo users bought the dogs from the truck driver, they are now safely in a kennel. Be amazed and listen to the full episode on the BBC website or direct link to MP3.

    一个”稳”字蕴涵着真理。

    以”禾”起笔意味吃饭当先,

    以”心”收底说明功在人心。

    人不是猪狗牛羊,

    吃饱喝足就万事大吉;

    人有心灵一颗,

    据说是上帝的赐予,

    就像胃囊,

    也是人体的重要器具;

    却不是食物可以填充,

    它只用来接纳公理和良知。

    当公理受阻隔良知被毁弃,

    这口袋就空空如也。

    胃囊空空的人无法远行;

    心灵空空的人无法安定。

    人类历史上的改朝换代,

    并不都是由胃囊引发。

    大清1900年GDP全球第二,

    十年后就寿终正寝;

    前苏联一直是军事强国,

    一夜之间分崩离析。

    无”心”则无”稳”,

    稳定需问“心”。

    鞭子只能决定羊群的走向,

    并不能臣服通天的心灵。

    走出”畜牧理论”的怪圈吧

    把”心灵建设”提上日程——

    落实信仰自由!

    落实言论自由!

    兑现公民宪法权利!

    唯此,

    才是建设稳定和谐的正途,

    才是”大国崛起”的基本指征!
