[Hong Kong TV’s New Chinese Partners a Cause for Concern]

HONG KONG—Legislators here are alarmed over a deal between a local television station and five Chinese state-run enterprises, expressing fears that programming, reportage, as well as Hong Kong’s media freedom will be compromised in the bargain.

Wang Zheng, a Chinese Real Estate tycoon and chairman of Rongfeng Holding Company, made the high profile purchase of Hong Kong Asia Television’s (aTV) stocks on March 11. He also negotiated with five Chinese state-run enterprises, namely, China Life, China Merchants Bank, China Shipping (Group) Company, GDH Investment Holding Company, and Bank of Beijing, to sign a “strategic alliance” with aTV to provide support, including advertising.

Legislator Lee Wing-tat, deputy chairman of the Panel on Information Technology and Broadcasting of the Hong Kong Legislative Council, expressed concern over the enterprises’ potential political influence and aTV’s autonomy. “I am worried that they would directly or indirectly influence or even manipulate aTV’s news and editing autonomy, which I have to keep a close eye on.”

Lee believes the transaction has taken advantage of a loophole in Hong Kong law; if the investment had come from Chinese governmental organs directly, the Hong Kong Broadcasting Authority and government would not have approved it as easily, he said.

Lee believes aTV has already been influenced by the mainland, and that Beijing had always wanted aTV to become a mouthpiece for the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

“Wang Zheng’s being high profile about the five state-run enterprises doing business with aTV shows that he wanted to make it known to the entire world that aTV is supported by the Chinese regime,” Lee said.

“This is one step worse than before. In the past at most one or two individual ‘red businessmen’ would become a big shareholder of aTV. But this time it’s five state-run enterprises, whose total assets are several hundred times more than that of aTV, becoming business partners.” While it may look like Chinese enterprises are supporting the aTV station, “often times business investments are not merely for business reasons, but for other social or political reasons,” he said.

Lee urged the Hong Kong government to be watchful of the move and speed up the process of providing Hong Kong residents with more free channels to encourage competition.

Hong Kong legislator Leung Yiu-chung was also concerned over the dealings. “What concerns me most is media monopoly, especially if it has political ties with the mainland. What we risk losing is the freedom of media. Everyone knows what matters most for Hong Kong is freedom, which, once compromised, would have a big impact on Hong Kong’s future,” he said. “The only weapon we have to protect ourselves is freedom of the press.”

aTV has been through three chairmen since Hong Kong was handed back to the mainland in 1997; each change involved investment from Communist Party-affiliated business groups.

In June 2007 the Hong Kong government approved CITIC Group (China International Trust and Investment Corporation), which answers directly to the State Council of China, and the pro-Beijing Cha Chi-ming family, to buy aTV’s stock. This made Chinese state-run enterprises major shareholders of a free TV network in Hong Kong for the first time.

Last year the CCP ramped up its efforts to extend its media influence worldwide, a policy dubbed by regime leader Hu Jintao as “going global.” In this connection the Party’s main mouthpiece, Xinhua, launched television networks in Asia and some European countries with the stated goal of transforming itself into a transnational multimedia news agency like AP or Reuters.

By July 2009 China Central Television (CCTV) had already started a 24-hour channel airing in 22 Arabic-speaking countries, reaching a total population of nearly 300 million people.

Commentators note that China’s breakneck-speed economic growth and increasing global clout have not come along with media freedom. The one-party state has only entrenched its rule in increasingly sophisticated ways, while strict limits on freedom of speech and civil and political rights remain in place. Civil rights advocates in Hong Kong see these developments as potential threats to their own liberty.

The CCP has openly pushed for tighter media restrictions in Hong Kong and Macau, and were partially successful in the latter case.

During a visit to Macau in late 2009, Chinese regime leader Hu Jintao advocated restrictions on freedom of speech for Hong Kong by urging the region to follow Macau’s lead in passing Article 23. The controversial law was shelved in Hong Kong after a street protest attracted 500,000 people in 2003, forcing its retraction.

[Justice Postponed for Internet Activists - Again]

    http://www.youmaker.com/

The high-profile court hearing of three Chinese Internet activists who had posted evidence regarding a murder case, lasted less than a minute when the prosecution requested more time to gather evidence. Several hundred Internet users from across China had gathered outside the courtroom in support of the defendants.

On the morning of March 19 in Fuzhou, a city in southern China’s Fujian Province, the three activists, Ms. Fan Yanqiong, Mr. You Jingyou, and Ms. Wu Huaying, were faced with the charge of “making false allegations.” They had posted materials regarding the rape and murder of 25-year-old Yan Xiaoling that had occurred in February 2008.

The materials, which were posted in June 2009, included an article and video testimony from the victim’s mother who alleged that her daughter was raped in turn by eight policemen and government officials and died the same night.

When family members questioned the cause of her death, they were told she died of an ectopic pregnancy. Yan’s mother alleged that police had removed her womb and vagina to destroy evidence.

The article and video clip spread quickly on popular Chinese Web forums. The Fujian Provincial Police Department held a press conference to announce that their investigation found that Yan died of an ectopic pregnancy. Soon after that, Fan, You, and Wu were detained by Fujian police.

Lawyer accuses court of ‘hooligan tactics’

According to defense lawyer Mr. Liu Xiaoyuan, the Fujian Provincial legislature had mobilized hundreds of police, including many in plain clothes, for the court session.

Liu said he was furious about the extension—the second time an extension had been granted to the prosecution.

He said that the court should have refused the prosecutor’s request and had good reason to do so. He accused the court of “hooligan tactics” by asking him to travel all the way from Beijing with the promise that a decision would be made.

If the court had truly been planning to make a decision, everything should have been prepared a few days ago. “Therefore, the prosecutor must have already discussed the request for a further extension with the court,” Liu said.

“According to regulations regarding criminal lawsuits, if the Procurator has insufficient evidence, then it is incumbent on the court to acquit the accused of all charges on the grounds of insufficient evidence,” he said.

Human rights activist Wang Lihong had come from Beijing to show his support. He told The Epoch Times that 400 to 500 people were there holding banners with slogans such as “Justice shines brighter than the sun.”

Wang said the police were rude and violent, and sometimes it was unclear whether they were police or possibly gangsters. When asked to show their police identity cards, they refused.

A nephew of one of the accused was beaten, and his camera was snatched.

One of the accused, Ms. Fan Yanqiong, complained that she did not get a chance to see her mother since she was dragged back out of the courtroom immediately. “At the previous trial, my mother was breathing through an oxygen mask and sitting in a wheelchair. I am very worried about my mother’s physical condition,” she told The Epoch Times.

Ms. Fan is herself paralyzed from the waist down, but her application for parole on medical grounds was not granted, according to Mr. Wang.

The case was first tried on Nov. 11, 2008. The court could not come to a decision despite exceeding the normal legal custody period. The defendant’s lawyer questioned the extended custody period, but the court claimed that this was approved, and the case had to be further investigated by the People’s Procurator.

When Liu requested to meet with his clients, he was denied by the police who cited “national security” reasons.

Liu said the case has created “two firsts” in China—the defendants were detained and charged with making false allegations for posting materials related to a murder case on the Internet, and the case was classified as one involving state secrets.

[Cargo Shipping Containers Marketed as Homes in Southern China]

The sign reads “Cargo Shipping Container House for Rent/Purchase” (The Epoch Times Archives)
Cargo shipping containers adapted as homes—complete with oven-like summer temperatures, storm hazards, and hordes of mosquitoes—have become the newest hot commodity in the manufacturing hub of Shenzhen.

Owning a conventional home has now become more and more unrealistic as local housing prices have grown much faster than many incomes. Even middle-class families find it difficult to afford housing.

The shipping containers, also known as intermodal containers, were once used exclusively for storing and shipping cargo, but now numerous ads touting their use as homes can be seen dotting roads to the east and west of Shenzhen City, according to a report in Guangzhou Daily on March 18.

The primary incentive for choosing a container house is the low cost: a 10 feet x 20 feet intermodal container can be rented for 6 yuan (US$0.88) per day, which adds up to only 180 yuan (US$26) a month, and 2,160 yuan (US$316) a year.

The container homes are frequently spotted in the woods, under bridges, beside construction sites, or near highways in Shenzhen as their owners, who often cannot obtain rights to land, know it is best to exercise caution toward city managers at all times. Residents usually go to work or school in the urban sectors. They return to their makeshift homes at night, often with the worry that they may be towed away while they are sleeping.

The average price of property in Shenzhen is now 20,000 yuan per square meter (approximately US$272 per square foot).

While the price of the intermodal containers is attractive, Mr. Wang Jilong, who has lived in an intermodal container with his son for seven years, said that one must live in one to understand the challenges it presents.

According to a report in the Economics Daily, Wang said he had purchased the container for 10,000 yuan (US$1,465) and rents the land.

His dream was to purchase a home when he first came to Shenzhen, but his income was too low to offset the increase in the price of housing. Because property rentals were also more than he could afford, he took up residence in an abandoned container that he found on a construction site.

With the current housing market as it is, it seems unlikely that Mr. Wang will relinquish his container home for a real one anytime soon.

    Promising Future for Container-home Manufacturers

“Cargo shipping-container home developers” are now able to successfully compete in the housing market due to the high demand for low-cost housing, according to Mr. Zhang, who manages a company which manufactures the containers as housing.

As far as business opportunities in Shenzhen go, there seems to be a definite future for this latest mode of housing.

Real estate marketing-plan specialist Xie Yifeng remarked, The interest in “cargo shipping-container houses is the best indication of China’s high price of housing.”

Reports indicate that Shenzhen’s housing market has not been affected by price-control measures, and prices have only continued to soar; the price-to-income ratio far exceeds the international warning line.

According to Governor Huang Huahua of Guangzhou, “Housing prices in Guangzhou and Shenzhen have risen over 40 percent in December and January of this year.”

[Beijing’s Handling of Gao Zhisheng Criticized]

    Gao Zhisheng
Renowned Chinese human rights lawyer Gao Zhisheng has been missing for more than a year. Under intense pressure from the international community, the Chinese regime has leaked out small bits of information through unofficial sources. However, the actual condition of Mr. Gao is still a mystery.

Mr. Gao wrote three open letters to regime leaders Hu Jintao and Wen Jiabao in 2005 condemning the brutal suppression of Falun Gong in China. In late 2006, he was charged with “attempting to subvert state power” and sentenced to three years in prison with a five-year suspension.

On March 16, British Secretary David Miliband questioned Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi regarding the whereabouts of Mr. Gao. Yang said only that Gao Zhisheng was “imprisoned on charges of subversion.” The next day, a BBC report revealed that Gao Zhisheng had had a phone call with his brother Gao Zhiyi.

Prominent Chinese lawyer Guo Guoting, who now lives in Canada, commented on the charge that the Chinese Foreign Minister mentioned. He said that this charge—subversion—would not hold even under current Chinese law.

“The charge that the Chinese Foreign Minister referred to must have been the ruling in 2006, which was a suspended sentence,” Guo said. A suspended sentence would indicate he was on probation and not required to serve in prison. Thus, it would be illegal for the Chinese regime to imprison him or covertly kidnap him to a secret location “unless the court officially changed the sentence.”

Such a change in ruling did not occur, Guo said, adding that the Chinese regime is openly violating its own legal system.

“Forced disappearance such as this is an international crime; that is, national courts from every country all have universal jurisdiction. In 2008, there was a particular international convention in this regard, a convention regarding forced disappearance which also applies to this crime,” Guo said.

Guo thinks that the regime was forced to disclose some information about Mr. Gao in order to quell the anger of the international community. The CCP would not dare to go against the entire international community, he said, because it relies on foreign markets to sustain its economic development. Thus, Mr. Guo hopes the international community will continue to pressure the CCP regarding Gao Zhisheng.

FDIC: U.S. House of Representatives Calls For End to Falun Gong Persecution in China

March 17: “The U.S. House of Representatives passed a resolution Tuesday urging the Chinese Communist Party to end its decade-long campaign against Falun Gong and expressing solidarity with victims of persecution in China.

House Resolution 605 recognizes, “the continued persecution of Falun Gong practitioners in China on the 11th anniversary of the Chinese Communist Party campaign to suppress the Falun Gong spiritual movement and [calls] for an immediate end to the campaign to persecute, intimidate, imprison, and torture Falun Gong practitioners.”

“The Falun Gong spiritual discipline is based on truthfulness, compassion, and tolerance,” said Representative Ileana Ros-Lehtinen from Florida, the Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and the resolution’s author. “Yet these innocents are brutally targeted by the Chinese regime, whose heinous tactics include harvesting the organs of Falun Gong practitioners and violently harassing even those practitioners living in the United States.”

“The stark reality which this resolution addresses gives new meaning to the phrase ‘Butchers of Beijing.’”

[…] The resolution’s text provides a detailed timeline tracking events from the origins of the violent persecution through to the widespread arrests and deaths of Falun Gong practitioners that accompanied the 2008 Olympic games.

“The passage and specific wording of this resolution is especially significant for it demonstrates that the persecution of Falun Gong practitioners in China is as urgent today as it ever was,” says Levi Browde, Executive Director of the Falun Dafa Information Center.

Agence France Presse: House resolution rejects anti-Falun Gong propaganda

March 17: “The US House of Representatives on Tuesday urged China to end its ‘persecution’ of the Falungong and rejected Beijing’s charge that the banned spiritual movement is an ‘evil cult.’

In a nearly unanimous vote, the House called on China to free thousands of practitioners who are said to be imprisoned and to abolish an office tasked with fighting the Falungong.

The House expressed ‘sympathy to Falungong practitioners and their family members who have suffered persecution, intimidation, imprisonment, torture and even death for the past decade solely because of adherence to their personal beliefs.’

A total of 412 lawmakers voted for the resolution. Only one voted against — Republican Representative Ron Paul of Texas. Paul, a maverick former presidential candidate, routinely opposes measures which he considers interference in another nations’ internal affairs.”

DC Human Rights Examiner: House resolution “encouraging” for persecution victims

March 18: “This past Tuesday, the United States House of Representatives passed House Resolution 605 in support of Falun Gong practitioners in China, who have faced years of persecution and discrimination at the hands of the Chinese government.

[…] H. Res. 605 is particularly important for people like Jin Pang of Gaithersburg, MD, whose mother and aunt have been held by Chinese authorities since the Bejiing Olympics for their adherence to Falun Gong’s meditational practices. Although Pang has been unable to see her mother and aunt since they were taken away, she remains hopeful and views this week’s Resolution as a positive step in the right direction.

‘[The Resolution] is really encouraging news to the Falun Gong practitioners like my mom and my aunt who are still detained and imprisoned.’”

FDIC: “Falun Gong Practitioner Cited in Gao Zhisheng Letter Dies from Torture in Custody

March 14: “An elderly Falun Gong practitioner, who was cited as a torture victim by prominent attorney Gao Zhisheng in an open letter to China’s leaders, died in January due to injuries incurred in custody. Ms. Liu Lihua (刘丽华), 61, is the second of Gao’s interviewees known to have subsequently died from abuse in custody. Gao himself has been ‘disappeared’ by Chinese security forces since February 2009.

Ms. Liu, a retired teacher from Shandong, died on January 28, 2010, after her release in September from a detention center, where she had been severely abused. Police detained her on March 24, 2009 as she was talking about the persecution against Falun Gong in public.

“During the time I was in prison, the guards employed absolutely inhumane means to torture me,” Liu told Gao Zhisheng in 2005, as cited in his open letter to Communist Party leaders Hu Jintao and Wen Jiabao urging them to end the persecution of Falun Gong practitioners. “Once I was continuously handcuffed for as long as 43 days. With both of my hands cuffed behind my back, I was hung on a metal door and was beaten.”

New York Times: “China Fails to Dispel Mystery About Missing Dissident”

March 16: “At a Beijing news conference, Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said … Gao Zhisheng, had been sentenced to prison for subversion. But Mr. Yang did not say whether he was referring to a new sentence or whether he was citing a suspended sentence that Mr. Gao had received in late 2006 after writing an open letter to President Hu Jintao alleging mistreatment of adherents of the banned Falun Gong movement.

On Tuesday, the United States Embassy in Beijing repeated its call for Mr. Gao’s release.

“We continue to call on the Chinese government to make Mr. Gao’s welfare and whereabouts known, to ensure that his treatment meets international standards, and to release him from custody,” said Susan Stevenson, an embassy spokeswoman.

The Falun Dafa Information Center, which tracks repression of Falun Gong adherents, said Sunday that an adherent cited in Mr. Gao’s 2005 open letter, Liu Lihua, had died of injuries believed to have been sustained at a detention center. Another adherent cited by Mr. Gao, Wang Yuhuan, was reported to have died in police custody in 2007.”

The Epoch Times: Google Partially Unblocks Chinese Search, but Falun Gong Websites Remain Mostly Blocked

March 16: “Search engine giant Google is rumored to have lifted restrictions on its Chinese search engine on Tuesday.

MSNBC reported that ‘web sites dealing with subjects such as the Tiananmen Square democracy protests, Tibet and regional independence movements’ could be searched and accessed through Google.cn, the Chinese search engine that Google provides for its mainland Chinese users.

The Epoch Times performed their own independent search for keywords related to the highly sensitive Tiananmen Square Massacre topic and the found the photo and associated search elements to be accessible.

The Epoch Times also found that a search for ‘Falun Gong,’ the meditation practice that is being persecuted by the Communist regime in China, resulted in one image showing a photo of anti-torture exhibits held by Falun Gong adherents around the world to raise awareness of the persecution. A link to Tian Ti Books, which sells Falun Gong books to the public, also showed up in the top of the search results, but the official websites for Falun Gong were not visible on search results.”

United Nations: “Human Rights Council Concludes General Debate on Promotion and Protection of All Human Rights”

March 15: “The Human Rights Council this morning concluded its general debate on the promotion and protection of all human rights, civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights, including the right to development, after hearing from a series of non-governmental organizations. Speakers spoke about violations of human rights in a range of countries affecting minorities and others.  […]

SHIZHONG CHEN, of United Rights Association of San Diego, said the Association urged the Council to end China’s continuing violation of the rights of the adherents of Falun Gong, in particular the use of nerve damaging chemicals to torture the practitioners of Falun Gong. Volumes of reports from the Council’s own Special Rapporteur had documented many cases of severe torture and killings of Falun Gong members by the Chinese authorities. Failing to break their wills with physical torture, the use of nerve-damaging chemicals had escalated to destroy their minds, killing and making many insane. China had also been asked to explain cases of organ harvesting from Falun Gong members. The international community should speak up against this.”

United Nations: “Independent Expert on Minorities Presents Reports to Human Rights Council”

March 16: “The Independent Expert on minority issues, Gay McDougall, this morning presented her reports to the Human Rights Council, which was followed by an interactive dialogue with her. […]

SHIZHONG CHEN, of United Nations Association of San Diego, reiterated the support of the United Nations Association of San Diego for the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. In China there was an escalation of prosecutions against human rights lawyers. Reports of United Nations Special Rapporteurs painted a different picture than what the Chinese Government was claiming. Professor Nowak had said that Chinese law was like a sword of Damocles and that it could be invoked to harass, intimidate and sanction lawyers. There were many cases of detentions of human rights lawyers. Those who dared to defend Falun Gong practitioners had been sentenced to serve prison sentences. The severe prosecution against human rights lawyers should bring the world to question China’s claims that it was ensuring the rule of law.”

  • Tibet’s Rivers Strangled by Dams

    Tibet’s Rivers Strangled by Dams

    By James Burke
    Epoch Times STaff

    Created: Mar 21, 2010 Last Updated: Mar 22, 2010

“If you want to kill a river, building dams is the best way to do it,” says Canadian documentary maker Michael Buckley. (Liu Jin/AFP/Getty Images)
BANGKOK—Canadian documentary maker Michael Buckley’s undercover bid to investigate the Tibet-China railway line was sidetracked when he discovered Tibet’s river systems were being strangled by large scale dam construction.

“I have been back and forth to Tibet a number of times and I never noticed the dams were there—but they are hidden, they are down gorges that you cannot see from the road,” Buckley told press after the screening his documentary film “Meltdown in Tibet,” in Bangkok.

Having teamed up with a group of tourists kayaking through Tibetan rivers in 2005, Buckley came across newly constructed dams built to divert water and hydro energy to China.

“So the only people [Westerners] who know about them are kayakers because they have come across them—they go down the river and all of a sudden there is a huge dam,” he said.

“If you want to kill a river, building dams is the best way to do it,” said Buckley.

Among the rivers originating from Tibet that he investigated for his 40 minute documentary was the Salween River, which also flows through China, Burma, and Thailand and empties into the Andaman Sea.

“The river is known as Gyalmo Ngulchu in Tibetan— roughly translating as “The Queen of Silver Water,” explained the film’s narration.

“Despite widespread protest from within China and from neighboring countries in Asia, Chinese engineers are forging ahead with plans for a cascade of 13 large dams on the Salween. Several dams are already under construction—one the height of a 60-story building.”

Buckley also investigated a river known to the Tibetans as the Dri Chu, or Yak River, which becomes the Yangtze—one of China’s most famous rivers—a river which, along with the Yellow River, now fails to reach the sea.

“In the upper reaches of the Yangtze River—at the edges of the Tibetan plateau—there are three more large dams under construction, and five more in the planning stages,” said his film.

Altogether his research found that 31 large dams are scheduled to be built in the Three Parallel Rivers region, which includes the Upper Yangtze, Upper Mekong, and Salween rivers.

    Mao’s Dictum

Buckley made the point that 60 percent of the Chinese communist leadership (including current head Hu Jintao) have an engineering background and many have vested interests in damming companies and the financing of international damming projects.

A 2006 photo of a Tibetan working with her yaks to plough a field. The Tibetan nomads would cultivate their autumn field area which sits at an altitude of 3,800 meters. However the Chinese communist authorities ruling Tibet have decreed that all Tibetan nomads be moved off the grasslands and permanently resettled in relocation centers. Beijing has set a deadline of 2011 to have this done by. (China Photos/Getty Images)
While China is the world’s most prolific dam builder, he said, the communist authorities do very little in the way of environmental impact assessments in their planning.

“In the 1950s, Mao’s dictum was that humans can conquer nature and he did some very bizarre projects, which tried to prove that you could take on nature and win and in a lot of cases they lost,” Buckley said.

“The Mao dictum is still around today—that the Chinese can take on nature and win. That has been permeating the Chinese mentality for the last 50 years.”

China’s own river system, he said, has been so devastated by uncontrolled industrialization that it has resulted in 70 percent of the nation’s water supply being undrinkable and unable to support aquatic life.

“The rivers are dead. … They are not trying to fix their rivers. Their solutions are ‘Let’s take the water from Tibet’,” he said. The diversion of water from the Tibetan highlands to parts of northern China, Mr Buckley said, is in planning stages and will be done via a vast network of concrete conduits.

“China’s grand pipe-dream is to divert abundant water from the Tibetan highlands to reach water-starved cities of the north and west of China, which have around 300 million people,” stated his film. “A diversion project of this scale enters a realm beyond anything ever attempted in water engineering.”

The electricity produced via the hydro dams in Tibet he added is not for Tibetans but for Chinese industry.

    Downstream

The Dza Chu, or Mekong River, begins its life in the mountains of Tibet and it becomes, as his film describes, “a roaring torrent as it swirls through deep gorges, dropping an astonishing 4,500 meters [14,800 feet] in elevation through Tibet and China, over a distance of 1,800 km [1,118 miles]—before turning tamer in Laos.”

Chinese damming efforts on the Upper Mekong, Buckley said have dramatically altered the flow of the river affecting those nations further downstream—Burma, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Environmental groups outside of China have been vocal in blaming four Chinese mega dams in the Upper Mekong for being the main reason why the famous river’s level has dropped to a 50-year low.

Beijing has soundly rejected the claims and blames drought for the water level drop, and has denied outside parties from accessing its records on how much water their dams hold.

    Tibetan Nomads

While much of Buckley’s documentary focuses on the affects of Chinese dam-building, it was also concerned about the plight of the Tibetan nomads.

“I am doing this to counter the propaganda view that ‘they [the Chinese Communist Party[ are into conservation’, which is ludicrous. They say they are moving the nomads off the grasslands because they want to conserve the grasslands and they are getting away with it,” Buckley said.

A lot these areas, which were inhabited by Tibetan nomads and their herds of yaks, have been declared national parks by Chinese authorities, he stated.

“It is just a cover. They don’t want people living there. The nomads are being taken off their land so as to make way for hydro projects and mining ventures,” he said.

Rivers, like other natural features such as lakes and mountains, are considered sacred by the Tibetan people his documentary explained.

“Socialist paradise TV programs harp on how ‘life of the nomads has been greatly improved’ and how the rail link will greatly benefit the lives of Tibetans. [On TV] there were singing nomads coming out right, left, and centre but the nomads are not singing, they are not happy, they are in concrete [relocation] camps,” he said.

“The nomads are the forgotten people of Tibet. No one is standing up for them, they are being wiped out and they will just disappear and no one is doing anything to stop that so it is a tragic situation.”

Since filming in 2005, he said the situation inside Tibet has gotten worse. He said that most of those involved in the film did want not their identities revealed for fear of repercussions from Chinese authorities.

  • Significant Enhancement of Biological Activity of Cardiac Cells by Falun Dafa (Falun Gong) Meditatio

Significant Enhancement of Biological Activity of Cardiac Cells by Falun Dafa (Falun Gong) Meditation Energy

    Ph.D. in Physiology and Biophysics

    ABSTRACT

This work reports that Falun Dafa (also known as Falun Gong) meditation energy (1-2) enhances the biological activity of cardiac cells, as detected by a conventional muscle research technique (4-14, see Methods). The papillary cell isolated from a rat ventricular wall was exposed to the meditation energy field generated by an experienced Falun Dafa practitioner, who positioned and held his hands beside the cell at a physically non-influential distance (~30 cm away from the cell). This meditation energy increased the muscle cell contraction force by 75.4% on average, with repeatable result, providing direct scientific evidence of Falun Dafa’s positive, energetic influence over a biological system, thereby verifying the existence of a Falun Dafa cultivation energy field. The intention of the present work is to substantiate Falun Dafa’s significance to the discipline of science, thereby encouraging more people to learn this profound cultivation practice.

    MATERIALS AND METHODS

A small papillary muscle bundle (2-5 mm x 200-500 m) was isolated from the right ventricular wall of a rat, mechanically, under microscope, in Krebs-Henseleit solution (K-H) saturated at 21 C with 95% O2 and 5% C O2 (14, Wang et al., 1999). The tendon end of the muscle was attached with stainless steel tweezers of a liner motor and the other end was attached to the force transducer tweezers. A 3 mm diameter cylindrical cuvette was slipped over the preparation and perfused with 95% O2 and 5% C O2 saturated Krebs-Henseleit solution. Guth Muscle Research System was used to simultaneously measure the muscle contraction force (13, Guth and Wojciechowski, 1986). The mechanical parts of the apparatus consisted of a force transducer, capable of measuring 1000 mg, with a response frequency of 800 Hz, a servo motor, feedback circuit, and power amplifier capable of making a 7 mm length change in 3 ms. The muscle was perfused with Krebs-Henseleit solution continuously throughout the experiment. The cell was stimulated at 1.0 Hz through the two tweezers attached to the ends of the preparation. Once the preparation was mounted in the apparatus, muscle length was adjusted, until maximum active twitch force was obtained. Each data record consisted of one control and one test run. The control record was taken over a 30 min period, before a test run, to ensure that the cell had a stable contractile activity.

After a 30 min stable control was recorded, the Falun Gong practitioner, (who had just done the five sets of Falun Gong exercises in a remote room), entered the experiment room, and held his hands beside the muscle cell, at a distance of ~30 cm away, without touching any part of the equipment or the preparation. While the experiment was being conducted, the practitioner sustained the meditation practice, in the posture of “holding Falun (Law Wheel).” The contraction force was directly recorded and digitized by a computer that interfaced with the Guth muscle research system.

    RESULT AND DISCUSSION

As shown in Fig. 1., after 30 min of constant amplitude of the cell contraction recorded as control, the practitioner applied the energy field, positioning and holding his hands beside the cell, after and during practicing Falun Gong exercises, resulting in a graduate increase in amplitude of the cardiac cell contraction. About 5 min after the application of the Falun Gong energy field, the cell contraction force increased by 35%, and stayed at a constant level for as long as the practitioner was present in the experiment room (note that the muscle cell had no additional biochemical substance such as ATP, enzymes or calcium ions (Ca2+) supplied artificially during the experiment). The practitioner had never physically touched the cell or the equipment, ensuring that there was no artifact interfering with the testing sample or with the recording system. The practitioner’s hands were held at ~30 cm of distance away from the cell, which was saturated in a circulated solution at constant temperature control, therefore there was no temperature change caused by the influence of his hands. The recording was performed by another research associate, who is not a Falun Gong practitioner.

Fig. 1. The Falun Gong cultivation energy field increased the contraction force of cardiac papillary cells. The muscle cells were attached to a force transducer in the Guth Muscle Research System and placed in a chamber filled with circulated Krebs-Henseleit solution saturated at 21 C with 95% O2 and 5% CO2. An electrical stimulation at 1 Hz at a voltage 20% greater than threshold was continuously applied to the cell. After a 30 min recording of a stable contraction force in the absence of the energy field, as control, the Falun Gong practitioner, who had just practiced the 5 sets of Falun Gong exercises, applied the energy field with his hands by holding Falun (the Law Wheel) in front of the abdomen (practice set 2). His hands were kept ~30 cm away from the cell, and far enough away from the recording system to avoid influencing the temperature, which would cause artifacts in the recording. Compared to the regular practicing posture, the hands stayed away from the body, and the palms were facing each other beside the cell, ensuring that there was no physical contact to the cell by the practitioner. As shown, after the energy field was applied, the contraction twitch tension force started increasing up to 35%, compared to the control, and stayed at a stable level. The same experiment showed that no change was detected with other non-Falun Gong individuals. This type of experiment was repeated more than 5 times, with similar results, as shown in this figure. Extent of the increase in the cardiac cell contractile activity by the energy field was by 35% ~ 111%, depending on the physical size of the cell and its initial condition after cell isolation, and the practitioner’s meditation state. No decrease in cell contraction by the energy field was detected.

In order to ensure that the effect shown in Fig. 1., is indeed due to the energy field of Falun Gong, after the practitioner had increased the muscle cell contraction up to 100% in a different experiment (Fig. 2), the practitioner left the room and stopped thinking about the cell to see if the cell contraction would change. As shown in Fig. 2, the cell contraction force gradually returned to the control level. This indicates that the increase in the contraction force was due to the practitioner’s energy field. The experiment shown in Fig. 1. and Fig. 2. were repeated at least 5 times with similar patterns in results, showing a 35~111% increase in the contraction amplitude.

A non-Falun Gong practitioner then imitated what the practitioner had done. The result was that the non-Falun Gong practitioner was not able to change the cell contractile activity, indicating that Falun Gong energy from cultivation practice is essential for significant increase in cell contraction force to occur.

Fig. 2. Cardiac cell contractile force was increased by 100% by the Falun Gong energy field, and returned to the control level, after the practitioner left the experiment room and stopped thinking about the cell. Except for the following modifications, all experiment conditions and procedures were the same as described in Fig. 1. After the cell contraction force was increased by 100% with the energy field applied to the cell, the practitioner stopped holding his hands beside the cell, but kept sitting in the room at a distance of ~3 feet away from the cell. The contraction force remained at the increased level. Interestingly, when the practitioner left the room and stopped thinking about the cell, the cell contraction force gradually returned to the control level, indicating that the energy field applied by the practitioner is essential for the increase of the cell contractile activity. This experiment was repeated more than 5 times, with similar results, as shown in this figure. The first arrow indicates the time point when the practitioner positioned his hands beside the cell, and the second one indicates the time point when he left the room.

Fig. 3. Cardiac cell contractile force was increased by (75.4 + 17.34)% in average by the Falun Gong energy field. As a summary of experiments described in Fig. 1 and Fig. 2, the increase in the papillary cell contraction force was averaged over 10 different individual cell preparations (numbers from 1 to 10 labeled in horizontal axis). The control for each isolated cell preparation was normalized to 100%, and plotted in a bar to the left for the corresponding sample indicated by each of the numbers (1 to 10). The contraction force in percentage of the control (after the Falun Gong energy field was applied) was plotted in a bar to the right for the corresponding sample. The averaged percentage values were illustrated by the pair of bars to the extreme right in the figure, for the averaged control (left bar. 100%) and increased force (right bar, 175.4%), respectively, as labeled “average.” The standard error for the averaged percentage of contraction force was + 17.34.

In summary of experiments shown in Fig. 1. and Fig. 2., Fig. 3 shows that the Falun Gong energy field increased the papillary cell contraction force by 75.4% on average over 10 individual experiments, using different isolated cells. The significant increase in the cell contractile activity by this meditation energy was repeatable over an increasing range from 35%-111% depending upon the initial condition of the cell and variables with regard to the practitioner. From the viewpoint of muscle research, muscle contraction is involved in many complicated cellular and molecular processes of excitation-contraction coupling, such as calcium transport from the cytoplasmic pool, calcium release from the intracellular calcium store sarcoplasmic reticulum through the ryanodine receptor/calcium channel (4-12). Which step(s) among those processes Falun Gong energy interacts with, is still unknown, leaving the subject open to future investigation. The real intention of the present work is to evidence Falun Gong’s scientific significance, to tell people that this cultivation meditation is not superstition and it is most profound science for spiritual enlightenment and mind-body health.

From general knowledge of the field, we know that an enhancement of muscle cell contractile activity requires supplementation with a biochemical energy source, such as ATP, enzymes, calcium ions, or some other physical energy source, such as heat, or electrical or magnetic energy added to the cell. In the present experiment, however, there were no such means used, with the exception of the practitioner positioning his hands beside the cell, while he practiced Falun Gong exercises. Obviously, the energy substance of an unknown content, responsible for such a dramatic increase in the contraction force of the cell, must have a correlative relationship to the energy field transmitted by the Falun Gong practitioner. This raises various questions: From what source was the energy substance transformed? Why does this energy have such a dramatic and beneficial influence over the biological activity of the cardiac cells? How has this energy been cultivated by a Falun Gong practitioner? To help answer these questions, the author recommends Falun Gong’s guide book, Zhuan Falun (1), and suggests that readers try to experience this exercise and meditation by themselves, finding the way reaching the peace, health and the truth of the universe.

This work provides scientific evidence for the healing benefit of Falun Gong meditation, and also help scientific open mind to discover the new field. Although there are still many unanswered questions regarding the mechanism of Falun Gong-enhanced cardiac cell biological activity, this research could prove beneficial to non-Falun Gong practitioners, for the purpose of encouraging people to seriously explore cultivation practice for themselves. This could also prove helpful for those who have misunderstood Falun Dafa, enabling them to reconsider this practice, or correct their misguided activities towards Falun Dafa. The author is also sincerely hopeful that this work would provide many thanks and encouragement to the people who show their understanding, support, and help to Falun Gong practitioners in China who have been and are being badly persecuted.

Science will never completely explain the profound Buddha Law. Contrary to what the scientific world may think, Buddha Law can enlighten people, and enable science to discover the truth. “The Buddha Fa is most profound; among all the theories in the world, it is the most intricate and extraordinary science. In order to explore this domain, humankind must fundamentally change its conventional thinking. Otherwise, the truth of the universe will forever remain a mystery to humankind, and everyday people will forever crawl within the boundary, delimited by their own ignorance.” Li Hongzhi (1).

Falun Dafa Cultivation’s Supernormal Alterations to Gene Expression (FSC-002)

    26-12-2003

    Preface

The influence of the mind (also referred to as “spirit” or “consciousness”) on the physical body is an open field in modern medicine. Recently, more and more pieces of evidence have demonstrated that the mind can alter the physical body in various ways, particularly through the endocrine and immune systems. However, there have been no efforts to try to understand how the mind alters gene expression. Three reasons account for this: First, modern science has difficulty defining and quantifying the mind; secondly, modern science solely focuses on the biological aspects of human body; thirdly, there hasn’t been a group of people with the same spiritual pursuits. Recently, the accomplishments of the human genome project and the widespread application of DNA micron-array techniques have made research in this field possible . Practitioners of Falun Dafa cultivation would make suitable subjects for such research. Their cultivation principles of assimilating into “Zhen-Shan-Ren” (Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance) and their practicing “no second cultivation way” are the main reasons for us to choose this group of people as our first choice of subjects for the study. We obtained some results that differed noticeably from normal values when we were studying the gene expression in the neutrophils of Dafa practitioners, including: improved immune systems, decreased cellular metabolic rates, and decreased expression of the protein degradation systems. Most interestingly, some of these changes are “two-way” alterations, which are beneficial for both sides. In order to further delineate the alteration mechanisms, we will first talk a little bit about the development and limitations of modern science, then further explain the results of our experiment.

The effects of the mind—a virgin land that science has failed to explore

Mind and matter “officially” separated in 17th century. Rene Descartes* (1596-1650), one of the founders of modern science and a philosopher and mathematician as well, believed that the universe had two different substances, mind and matter (Dualism). He believed that science can not study the mind, so he told his friend—famous scientist, Galileo Galilei (1564-1642), “The mind is too difficult to research. You are a scientist, so go and study matter and leave the mind to religion.” In earlier times, religion was very strong and suppressed science. Later, science fully developed stepped into a glorious age, and religion was completely defeated. Even the Pope (Paul II) also acknowledged that Darwin’s theory of evolution was “more than just a theory” in October 1996. It seems that religion, which should be responsible to the development of the mind and the spirit, is now converting to science, which only focuses on understanding matter.

The foundation of modern science is “believing after seeing”. Whenever a spiritual factor is involved, everyone feels uncomfortable. Spiritual factors are too complicated. How can we study them? It cannot be seen and cannot be touched, and we do not have equipment capable of measuring it. To give an example, we felt quite powerless when some people frankly told us that “conscience cannot be exchanged with money, so we don’t care about it. How much is one jin of conscience?” No one could define or quantify mental or spiritual states. For example, a mole could not represent a unit of happiness; joy doesn’t have a concentration; a gram could not represent a unit of sadness; units could not describe a degree of hatred; decibels could not show an amount of pain, and so on. Having no way to measure these things, modern scientists choose to neglect spiritual or mental factors. However, people do see the consequences of the influence of positive or negative emotional states.

Recently, scientists have finished sequencing the genomic libraries of humans and of several other creatures. The human genomes and those of gorillas are 99% identical. The high level of duplicate sequences between humans and other animals, including mice, is also surprising. Humans have only three times more genes than that of a Drosophila (13,600). Ten percent of human genes are highly related to the genes in Drosphila and C. elegance [1, 2]. Human and bacterial genes (113) also hold many similarities [3-5]. The most surprising thing is how tens of thousands of similar genes, can be the foundation for both humans and mice. Humans and mice share amazingly similar biological systems, including even the neuron systems. Many molecules are interchangeable (6). These discoveries seemingly support Darwin’s theory of evolution, which eliminated the uniqueness of the human biology in nature and therefore made it more acceptable to use animals as substitutes for humans in experiments. But please think about it carefully, what exactly is the difference between humans and C. elegance, Drosophila and the mouse?

A human being is not just a flesh body, or an animal with a human shape. The biggest difference between humans and animals is spiritual and mental. Therefore, a mouse will not feel guilty for stealing food, and a pig will not feel pain due to an unhappy marriage. Even a monkey, which is so close to humans, will not feel embarrassed if found naked. Only humans possess a consciousness of higher realms. Of course, because man has a physical body, he also experiences purely physical pains and illnesses, such as his arm breaking, losing teeth, genetic deficiencies, as well as birth, old age, illnesses and death. Physically, humans and animals may not differ much. Researchers are currently discovering, however, that more and more illnesses relate to mental and spiritual factors. Even the penetration rate of a genetic disease caused by gene deficiency also highly correlates with spiritual and mental factors.

In simpler words, the trial of a new drug in modern medicine begins from in vitro tests with cultured cells and in vivo tests with animals: first with mice, then with bigger animals, such as monkeys, and finally with humans. Most of the drugs are produced in this way. Of course, drugs designed in this way can only target one’s physical body, because science has never been able to really consider spiritual factors. Even if the final test is on the human body, it still treats the human body as merely a piece of living flesh made of molecules and without a spirit, or just as a body similar to those of animals.

Problems caused by the materialistic feature of drugs can be found everywhere. Medical doctors often notice that when using the same drug to treat patients with different attitudes toward life, the results might differ greatly. The outcome might also differ when a patient is treated with the same drug while under different personal conditions. The effect and toxicity of one particular drug could vary when the patient was treated while in different mental states. This is because during different mental states the body responds differently to drug treatments, and the liver and kidneys’ ability to process and excrete drugs can also differ. It is conceivable that the toxicity of a drug administered to an optimistic person could diminish, while to a person in very low spirits, it could be very harmful [7]. In daily life one can easily see one’s mentally-related bodily responses to a material as well, such as tolerance to alcohol or some particular foods. Science cannot answer these questions because they go beyond its range of research.

The one-sidedness caused by developing drugs in a purely materialistic way probably only constitutes a minor problem. What is more problematic thing is that people accustom themselves to relying solely upon scientific advancements and improvements in the quality of medicines. This dependence on external factors not only disturbs the inner biological self-regulation, but also results in a often forgotten and more terrible consequence: We give up our own spirituality. It accounts for why research like human cloning exists. In its extreme manifestations, people no longer trust themselves. People are different from other animals because we have human minds and spirits, not just human bodies.

In fact, during the natural development of an organism, it consistently establishes a system that is as self-regulated and self-optimized as possible. The human body establishes its immune system’s ability to distinguish itself from foreign materials in this way. The balance between the apoptosis in a cell and its proliferation maintains the integrity of the organism. The self-development and self-repairing mechanism established in an organism is the optimum process. Otherwise there will be no normal development and turnover. These regulations are on a holistic level rather than on a particular site. People often say, “Calm down and ‘take a rest and nourishment to regain your health’”., meaning: Let it go naturally and wait for the body to recover by itself. Every cellular activity involves numerous molecules and cells. Most molecules and cells are double-edged swords. For example, one of the most important transcription factors called NF-kappa B, which controls the synthesis of growth factors, plays a role in killing microorganisms. But at the same time it also damages itself [8-11]. Therefore, the regulations on the molecular level can never avoid side effects, which are often negative. But modern medicines function only on this level, so they cause both benefits and damages. While spiritual regulations perform on a higher level, their functioning target is not a particular gene, but to maintain a balance between positive and negative factors.

Dafa practitioners are pioneers of a universal science

At present more and more people are beginning to acknowledge the influence of the mind on the body. The financial support from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in this area has increased each year. In 1999, it granted the University of Pittsburgh 10 million dollars to study the interaction between the mind and the body. Recently NIH also funded a program on curing patients with AIDS through “prayer therapy”. It also assigned some research funding to study the placebo effect. In addition, research grants on alternative medicine have increased each year. This research emphasizes the patients’ psychological changes. Though researchers have obtained some positive results, with their narrow mindsets, they still have not made any important breakthroughs.

Science has progressed slowly in the field of the mind because it neither quantify nor define the mind. Because scientists cannot clearly understand how the mind works, their treatments in that aspect remain within the boundaries of subjective consciousness, focusing on emotions and moods. On the other hand, as the society’s morality declines, the boundary between good and bad blurs. In 1992, Mr. Li Hongzhi introduced Falun Dafa to the public. Mr. Li said, “A person has a physical body, yet a person is not complete with only a physical body. One must also have human temperament, personality, character, and Primordial Spirit in order to constitute a complete and independent person with individuality. The same is true with our universe, which has the Milky Way, other galaxies, as well as life and water. All things and matter in this universe are aspects of material existence. At the same time, however, it also possesses the characteristic Zhen-Shan-Ren.”(Zhuan Falun, Chapter One) When one’s mind assimilates to the characteristic of the universe, Zhen-Shan-Ren (Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance), one can experience the true value of life and witness the truth of the universe. Zhen-Shan-Ren has struck a chord in the hearts of over 100 million people. Those over 100 million people have stepped onto the path of assimilating to the characteristic of universe, Zhen-Shan-Ren. When a society becomes so materialistic, however, it becomes difficult to purify one’s mind.

The magazine Nature published an article on economic research that reported that people are gradually losing patience. In animal experiments, people found that animals do not understand the concept of long-term benefits. They only care about immediate individual gains and for them sometimes sacrifice larger benefits for an individual or their whole group in the end. At present more and more people act similar to animals, already inflicting much damage to society and to human beings. Actually, this is an inevitable consequence of people excessively pursuing material gains and neglecting spirituality. Humans and animals differ very little in terms of molecular structure. Ignoring spirituality definitely will lead to more animal-like social behaviors.

Assimilating to Zhen-Shan-Ren is obviously incompatible with those aforementioned animal-like social behaviors. Cultivators have exposed the biases of modern science with their own experiences, particularly during the last three years of receiving brutal persecution in China. The human mind has a standard, which is Zhen-Shan-Ren, the characteristic of the universe. Mind and matter are the same. Dafa practitioners practice the Falun Dafa exercises (physical) as well as cultivate their hearts (mind). They have reached the realm of “harmony between heaven and man” during the process of assimilating to the cosmic spirit. Under the guidance of Zhuan Falun (the main text of Falun Dafa, written by Mr. Li Hongzhi), Dafa practitioners have investigated how the process of assimilating to cosmic principles of Zhen-Shan-Ren has an impact on the human body, life, and even human society. They are the pioneers of the universal science. In the following paragraphs, we will discuss some of the supernormal characteristics of Dafa practitioners’ cells and a possible explanation of their biological mechanisms.

Dafa practitioners are a protective group

The quality of health of a group of people depends on the total resistance of the group. In other words, the more people who can resist a certain disease, the less likely an epidemic will occur. In terms of responding to microorganisms, there exists a particular group of people, called “carriers”. Carries did not suffer the disease themselves, but neither can they purge the disease-related microorganisms. So they will pass them to others. During World War II, a famous carrier called Typhoid Mary belonged to this type. Mary Mallon was a Typhoid carrier. She could not kill the bacteria in her body by herself but she did not suffer the disease. She was a cook and many people who ate her food became infected.

Nevertheless, if many people have strong resistance, they will provide protection for the whole group. We compared the expression of 12,000 leukocyte genes in healthy non-practitioners and practitioners using a DNA microarray technique [16]. We found that over 300 genes had been noticeably altered by being raised or lowered; their expression levels sometimes differed by many dozen times. Some of the raised altered genes included those related to immunity, such as the anti-microorganism factor Defensin [17-19], interferon [20], and I-309 [21-23], which functions to resist HIV. In addition, the ability of white blood cells to engulf bacteria also improved. The enhancement of resistance can help to purge harmful microorganisms, which can prevent harmful microorganisms from spreading further, and can thus benefit those surrounding the individual. It may be one medical explanation of “when one person cultivates, the whole family will benefit.”

However, the immune system is a double-edged sword; excessive enhancements will not only kill harmful microorganisms, but also normal cells. Surprisingly, we found another supernormal alteration in the body of Dafa cultivators. The expression of some genes which can prevent cell death upon inflammation stimulation, such as Bcl2, and Bcl-xL[24-26], decreased dramatically. This ensures a quick death of those inflammatory cells after they kill bacteria in order to alleviate the harm of inflammation to the body. This “benefiting both self and others” system is the best regulatory pathway.

As we all know, more and more microorganisms have begun to resist drugs. Many antibiotics no longer function and are no longer used. This could be partially attributed to the abuse of antibiotics. The enhancement of the total immunity in Dafa practitioners can prevent the need to use antibiotics. From any point of view, Dafa’s cultivation principles completely benefit one’s overall health. From a social and medical perspective, a cultivator’s body is an ideal protection group to a whole group of people.

The “black hole” in white blood cells of Dafa practitioners diminished

Black holes serve as “cosmic graves”, responsible for eliminating aging and dying celestial bodies so as to clean up the universe. Looking at whole human body, we have an excretion system. Cells also resemble small universes. But where is the system that deals with waste disposal?

The metabolism determines the rate of cellular protein synthesis and degeneration. In every cell cycle, the proteins in the cell need to be renewed. In a healthy human cell, 50% of abnormally synthesized proteins are degenerated in a complex process called proteasome. Even a normal cell can produce a lot of abnormal, misfolded, or damaged proteins, possibly as many as one third of its total proteins. Under pathological conditions, this percentage could be even higher.

The full name of this protein degeneration system is the Ubiquitin dependent protein degeneration system (UPP) [28,29]. Three major enzymes of the system, E1, E2, and E3, hold responsibility for the degeneration of many important proteins in the cell, including proteins involved in cell cycle controls, cell division and differentiation, development, stress responses, morphological development of the neuron system, lowering of membrane receptors and ion channels, synthesis of cytoplasmic organelles, DNA repair, and regulation on immune responses and inflammation. In recent years, more and more diseases have been found to be related to the malfunction of this system, including some genetic diseases, recessive diseases in the neuron system, metabolic disorders, cancer, muscle atrophy, diabetes, hypertension, septicemia, autoimmune diseases, inflammation, and some aging-associated disorders [2, 29-32]. In most cases, these diseases are marked with an increased activity of the degeneration system along with a higher than normal metabolism rate. Looking from the physiological and pathological perspective, this system serves as a black hole of the cell.

We found that in the white blood cells of practitioners a series of important enzymes of the system are dramatically lowered. The 12 enzymes, including E2 and E3, could be lowered a couple dozen times on average. We believe that this lowering is not primary, but secondary. The lowering of the expressions of some other genes involved in the DNA, RNA, protein metabolism and the cellular oxidation process suggests that the cause is the decrease of metabolic products (waste). Animal experiments also suggest that when the metabolic rate decreases, the expression of the proteasome system in the liver lowers as well. This also supports the idea that a lower metabolic rate can lead to a decrease in UPP [33, 34].

One current clinical trial is to use proteasome inhibitors to treat cancer. Researchers have obtained some positive results [35] and have not reported any noticeable toxicity yet. This marks the clinical significance of regulation of this system. However, this system involves the regulation of many important molecules. It is simply impossible to completely avoid side effects.

We believe that, when one is under pathological conditions, either due to their insufficient ability to process waste or a genetic deficiency in the proteasome system, the best way to fix it is not to target the system per se, but on a higher level to reduce the generation of waste. Even under healthy conditions, a relatively low metabolic rate also benefits the organism. For example, animals with low metabolic rates have a smaller chance of contracting diseases and a lower death rate, and a higher resistance to diseases..
It is not difficult to understand that it is harmful to inhibit the black hole in order to reduce the waste processing. A simple example is, if a factory has too much waste, should we try to reduce the waste or just reduce the waste processor? If we consider the protein degradation system as a black hole, we believe that it is unchangeable, and has the ability to automatically adjust itself.

According to some recent reports, black holes in our Milky Way Galaxy seem very busy just like their counterparts in our cells. Dying celestial bodies have filled the black holes in our galaxy. Should we also attempt to fix them? Probably no drug designer will try to produce a compound to cure the pathological condition of the black hole in our galaxy. However, based on the principle of “harmony between heaven and man”, if we can fix the black hole of mankind, the black hole in our galaxy will also be getting better correspondingly.

In fact, not only can we change black holes by assimilating to Zhen-Shan-Ren, the human body, living creatures and the whole universe will all reach a harmonious state as well. But this harmony depends on the assimilation of human heart to Zhen-Shan-Ren. The changes of gene expression and cell activity found in Dafa practitioners suggest that changes occur on the molecular and cellular level when man communicates with the universe. We believe that in the near future we will have more and more results to share with you. Assimilating to Zhen-Shan-Ren will correct the human heart and refresh everything.
